Establish Your Publishing Career by Contributing to Literary Journals

Reach an Audience and Find a Home for Your Writing

Many authors get a big rush when they finally finish a piece of creative writing. Whether you’ve finished a poem, short story, or essay, the feeling is often the same: Satisfaction that you’ve completed a piece of writing.

However, for writers who have active publishing careers, finishing a piece is just the first half of the process.

This course guides you through the second half of the process: Finding a home for your writing, so that it can reach readers, establish your credibility, and validate the quality of your work.

This course will teach you how to:

  • Consistently get your writing published in literary journals
  • Build a publishing record that establishes your credentials as an author
  • Get your work noticed by publishers of full length manuscripts
  • Reach a diverse audience with your writing
  • Get your name in print (and on your bookshelf!)
  • Gain access to better career and education opportunities

The course starts on Monday, October 4th and ends on Friday, October 29th. Everything is held online. Enrollment is strictly limited to 24 students.

During this four week course, Emily Harstone presents the system she has developed for building a wide record of publication across the world in literary journals and anthologies.

In this course, you’ll learn how to approach publishers with confidence, knowing that your writing is ready for publication.

You won’t be alone in the process. As part of the course, you will get detailed feedback on your writing and personal recommendations of publishers who may be a good fit for your work.

As a special addition for this session of the course, we brought in a guest instructor, Daisuke Shen. Daisuke has worked on the editorial staff of a number of different literary journals, taught fiction and creative non-fiction to college students, and has had fiction and non-fiction published widely in literary journals. Daisuke will be providing feedback on short fiction and creative non-fiction, as a complement to Emily Harstone's feedback on poetry. (Note, if you have a preference for a specific instructor's feedback, you are welcome to request an instructor.)

Even once the course is completed, you will remain part of the Authors Publish community – and have ongoing access to live office hours with all of our instructors, so you can get your questions answered.

Emily Harstone, as the author of Submit, Publish Repeat is the ideal instructor for this course. In addition to helping many writers find publication as a submissions consultant, she has published her poetry widely in dozens of literary journals and anthologies around the world, for many years. We are excited to include Daisue Shen in the faculty of this course, as Daisuke's expertise and experience with creative non-fiction and short fiction is the perfect complement to Emily Harstone's experience as a poet.

Both instructors will hold live office hours, in addition to actively participating in course discussions.

All of our recent courses have sold out within a day of announcing them to our full audience. If you are interested in joining this session of the course, I encourage you to enroll right now.

For authors of prose, you'll be able to get feedback on up to six thousand words, during each round. For poets, you may submit up to five poems, for each round of feedback.

The one thing I noticed is that there is little information about how to go about getting published. This course gives you insight on how to improve your writing, gives the opportunity to make friends willing to start writing groups, and gives the "secrets" to going about getting your work published. I learned and gained a lot more in this course than I had expected. The critiques received from the instructor and from classmates is invaluable. I feel more confident in editing my work, providing feedback to others, and knowing how to approach journals and where to find them. It is a confidence I didn't have before the course. Thank you!
