One of the most accessible ways to build a career as an author is to publish your writing in literary journals. Not only does publishing in literary journals allow you to get your work in the world and reach an audience, it also establishes your credibility, and can attract the attention of agents and publishers.
This course gives you the knowledge, tools, and support so you can regularly get published in literary journals.

During this course instructors Emily Harstone and Daisuke Shen will guide you through the entire process of finding a home for your writing, so you can reach readers, establish your credibility, and enter the world of traditional publishing.
This course will teach you how to:
The course includes detailed feedback on your writing, personal help putting together a submission packet, and recommendations of publishers who may be a good fit for your work.
This course includes rounds of feedback on your writing, including up to 6,000 words of prose or ten poems. This is in addition to feedback on your bio, as well as the personal publisher recommendations your instructor will be providing.
Please note, due to the level of feedback being provided, enrollment in this course is strictly limited.
The course starts on Monday, May 6th, and ends on Friday, May 31st. Outside of the official course dates, you will have a full six months to complete the course, and submit your work for feedback.
Even after the course is complete, you will be welcome to attend office hours with all of our instructors, so you can continue to get support (at no additional cost), and remain part of our community.

In addition to the four weeks of training, Emily Harstone and Daisuke Shen are generously offering personal feedback on your writing.
The course includes two rounds of feedback on your writing.
For authors of prose, you'll be able to get feedback on up to six thousand words, during each round. For poets, you may submit up to ten poems for each round of feedback.
Emily Harstone and Daisuke Shen will also personally recommend publishers that may be a good fit for your writing. Many past students have found success publishing their creative writing using the recommendations in this course.
Because of the intense level of personal feedback offered in this course, we are strictly limiting enrollment. Once we reach the limit, we will immediately close enrollment.
The course starts on Monday, May 6th and ends on Friday, May 31st. The course comes with daily lessons you can study on your own time, and daily interaction with Emily Harstone and Daisuke Shen. Everything is provided online, through the digital learning platform hosted by Thinkific.

Read LessEmily Harstone is the pen-name of the author of many popular books, including Submit, Publish, Repeat, The Authors Publish Guide to Manuscript Submissions, The 2023 Guide to Manuscript Publishers, and The Authors Publish Guide to Children’s and Young Adult Publishing. Through these books, she has helped many writers connect with quality publishers for their books.
As a professional submissions adviser, she has helped many writers successfully place their work in literary journals.
Emily graduated with an MFA in Creative Writing from Sarah Lawrence College, then worked as a creative writing professor at Berkeley College in New York, as well as Seattle Pacific University.
She went on to become a co-founder of Authors Publish Magazine, where she regularly engages with the editors of literary journals.
Daisuke Shen is the author of the collaborative novella Funeral with Vi Khi Nao (KERNPUNKT Press 2023). Their debut short story collection, Vague Predictions & Prophecies is forthcoming from CLASH Books August 2024.
Their work has been published in numerous journals, including Autostraddle, Southwest Review, The Asian American Literary Review, Joyland Magazine, Maudlin House, Hobart After Dark, and more. They received an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from the University of North Carolina Wilmington in 2019, where they taught undergraduate creative writing courses for three years.
As a teacher, Daisuke is passionate about supporting each student’s visions for their writing and discusses the craft of fiction using different narrative traditions throughout the world. They are enthusiastic about providing them with resources, thoughtful feedback, and encouragement as they continue building their careers. You can read more of their work at www.daisukeshen.com.
The course starts on Monday, May 6th and ends on Friday, May 31st. The course comes with daily lessons you can study on your own time, and personal feedback on weekly assignments from Daisuke Shen and Emily Harstone.
Please note that you will have a full six months to complete the course and submit your work for feedback. Also note that you will be invited to future office hour sessions, even after the course is complete.
Expect to spend around 30 minutes a day on the course. Some days will require less work, some days will require more. Daily lessons can be done on your own time. The meetings with Emily will be scheduled to best work for the entire class.
Because of the personal feedback Emily & Daisuke are providing, the workshop is strictly limited to 30 students. Once we reach that number we will immediately close enrollment.
This course is designed to help writers publish their poetry, short stories, creative nonfiction, and flash fiction. Both literary and genre writing work well for this course. Excerpts of a larger work are not ideal for this course. This course is ideal for writers of poetry, memoir, and short stories.
Please note that feedback is limited to up to 6,000 words of prose, ten poems, or three flash fiction pieces for each round of feedback, for a total of two rounds of feedback.
This level of feedback is a large part of why we are limiting enrollment to 30 students.
