Down and Flirty: Writing Romance Novels Readers Will Love

You are invited to participate in a writing workshop with New York Times bestselling author Emily Colin. This course is for writers who want to learn the art and craft of the romance novel.

In this one-week intensive, you’ll get to the heart of writing an engaging romance novel, learning what draws readers in and keeps them turning pages until your characters’ happily-ever-after. You'll also get insider industry knowledge, guidance on publication, and personal feedback on your work.

Here’s some of what you’ll learn:

  • Romance subgenres and which one your book fits into
  • Writing engaging heroes and heroines—what makes readers fall in love with them.
  • Plotting, pacing, and hitting the right “beats” (and how this is ‘wedded’ to character arc in romance)
  • Creating an engaging setting or community for your story
  • Point of View (POV) in romance (often 3rd person limited, shifting dual POV)
  • Tropes—what they are, why they matter, and how to make the classics fresh
  • The importance of the HEA (happily-ever-after) or HFN (happily-for-now)
  • Heat levels and how they relate to your genre
  • Writing romantic scenes (regardless of heat level) that drive the plot & help readers get to know your characters
  • Writing single-title versus series romances
  • How to analyzing romance readership and understand the market
  • Representation in romance, including LGBTQIA+
  • Advantages/disadvantages of publishing models (traditional, indie, self-publishing)

What you’ll do:

During the class, you'll learn the art of crafting an engaging romance novel that resonates with readers and publishers. Emily will lead you through the entire creative process, offering five carefully constructed presentations. Each presentation targets a specific aspect of romance writing, brimming with industry insights, craft techniques, and tips to elevate your work.

By the end of this course, you'll be armed with the knowledge you need to successfully write a romance novel that fulfills your unique vision as an author, meets the needs of publishers, and wins over readers.

In addition, Emily will give you in-depth, written feedback on two pieces of your work. The first is your back-cover copy. If your novel isn't done yet, this is a great exercise to make sure you have a solid grip on the story.

Emily will also give you detailed feedback on the first 10 pages of your manuscript. These are the most important pages of your book, in terms of hooking both readers and publishers.

You'll be able to discuss Emily's feedback with her personally over email, or during the live class meetings. (Note, the meetings will be held online, via Zoom.)

In addition to the extensive pre-recorded course material, there will be three live class meetings. During these meetings, Emily will offer specific advice for your manuscript, discuss student work in a group setting, and lecture on the art and craft of writing a romance novel. One of the meetings will be the "write-in," where you'll share your progress with the group, and spend time writing together. Emily is excited about this, as it’ll give all of you a chance to get to know each other better, and for Emily to offer real-time feedback on any challenges you’re facing.

The meetings will be recorded for those who can't make it. The meeting schedule is as follow:

  • Wednesday, August 23rd at 2pm ET: Presentation on Writing Opening Pages that Shine & Live Q&A Session
  • Friday, August 25th at 2pm ET: Write Together and Networking
  • Wednesday, August 30th at 2pm ET: Live Feedback Session and Office Hours

Please note, this workshop is strictly limited to fifteen students. We will immediately close enrollment as soon as the course is filled. If you are planning on taking this course, you are encouraged to enroll right away.

Emily Colin's course was amazing. She packed so much useful information into one week of lectures (which are downloadable!); and provided lots of tips and suggestions for further reading, etc. She clearly knows the romance biz; and it was refreshing to be able to talk about that aspect of things. And last but not least, of course, is the feedback: Emily provided high quality comments on my assignments. She was a very caring instructor who genuinely tried to understand all our stories. I feel ready to go forth and write!

Emily Colin is a hard-working instructor. Instead of skimming through my work, she would dissect it bit by bit and ask me questions that I haven't been asked before. It helped me to look at my story from a different perspective. Since she concentrated on this being a YA story instead of a romance, she gave me feedback to make my story work for the YA market. I am really glad I took this course.

Emily's course was very well laid out and included a lot of useful information. While some of it was familiar, it was useful to understand her take on it. It also helped confirm previous research I had done on several topics, which was a relief! Emily's feedback was always helpful, insightful and thought provoking. She really went above and beyond what was promised. Sometimes an 'online' format can end up being detached and mechanical, but not this one!

An excellent course, well put together with lots of insight, extra information and thought from Emily Colin. I really enjoyed doing the daily lessons and the homework exercises, which helped me to think about aspects of writing and structure that I had not considered before. The price of the course was well worth it for the content. Emily gave us personal feedback on submitted pieces of work and was very encouraging of ideas and thought processes, which I really appreciated. Asking us to consider how our own favourite writers (in published YA novels) tackle certain barriers such as plotting, stakes, etc, was a useful tool to apply to our own work. Overall, a fantastic course for anyone serious about writing, even if they don't plan to write or publish YA.
